Lafayette, LA

We stayed overnight in the parking lot at Vermillionville Living History Museum in Lafayette LA. huge parking lot, lots of green areas, beside a muddy river but there’s a beautiful pond with water lillies. Vic got shots of a mother Wood Duck and her many babies in the pond.

We drove around the surrounding area looking for a seafood restaurant. I was so hoping for some shrimp and grits. Instead, it was abandoned boarded up house after house. Holy cow.

The good news is the gate locks at 4:30 pm, keeps the riff raff out. We have the code so we aren’t trapped in here.

There are several other campers here. We talked to two couples traveling together from Quebec. Dennis, Pat, Linda and Yogi. There was a story about the yogi nickname but they said it was a very long one and we didn’t hear it. Each couple has a class C. One couple had a container on a platform on the back where they stored their e-bikes.

Vic met a fellow boondocker here that told him about a great birding area in St Charles. We are going there next.

The next post should have some pictures.

Ocean Springs MS

We are staying at Ft Bayou Brewing Company, a brewery in Ocean Springs. You walk across a wooden bridge over water with turtles and koi to enter the building. We took Zoe in and hung out in the game room. Pool table, table tennis, table shuffleboard (we tried it Diane Madden!) and bean bag toss. Vic threw a few bean bags which Zoe thought was a game for her so she chased the bags. In between tosses she sat under a chair out of the way.

We ate there too, at least Vic did.

Pork BBQ with sweet potato fries

Then we found a dog park for Zoe. She played with Jack and Wiggles, sorry no pic of their fun.

In the morning we leave for Vermillionville Living History Museum in Lafayette LA.

We are gassed up ready to go. $3.59 for diesel again. Yay

Pensacola Fl

Time zone change – we gained an hour!

We are staying at an American Legion, nice big grassy field all to ourselves. Lovely spot, no traffic noise, very quiet.

We went to the Pensacola Dog Park which turned out to be a beautiful sand like sugar beach. Zoe did her usual roll and dig and loved it.

Vic walking Zoe

Then we explored the area – there is a national park with an admission fee of $25. Vic has a free pass to all national parks because he’s retired military. There were a couple of campgrounds built around abandoned military buildings (Fort Pickens) created to defend the coast.

Then we went to the Boardwalk at Pensacola and enjoyed a walk around. They were having a crawfish festival so dinner was a basket of crawfish with corn on the cob and red potatoes.

Today was a great day – easy travel, we love our camp site, and the beach was fantastic.

Tomorrow we go on to Biloxi. We’ve already gassed up $3.55 (diesel).

Tallaheessee

We are staying on the property of the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. This is the second time we’ve stayed here and not toured the museum. Lol one of these days …

This morning we went to St. Marks Wildlife Refuge for the first time. It’s huge with well maintained paved roads throughout. People come for the birding, hiking trails, boat launches and fishing. We saw a wide assortment of birds including a tricolor heron with vivid breeding plumage. It was wow!

There is a restored Lighthouse. A school bus full of teenagers got a tour.

We go on to Pensacola, FL, then Biloxi LA (overnight).

Vic was the one on the right side of the road today. His tricolor heron shots knocked me out!

Pelicans Roost

This military base

Pelicans Roost is the ocean side campground. There’s another one called Osprey Cove.

Vic walking. Our camper is beside the left palm tree. We have an ocean view.

Signs are posted no pictures allowed of the boats/ships that are being moved around constantly. People fish from the rocks.

We went to the beach a couple of times but it was very windy. We haven’t seen any birds so no wildlife photography for this post.

So this post isn’t a complete bore, here’s pictures of Zoe and her braid.

We leave in the morning. Next stop the auto museum in Tallahassee. There’s a birding place called St Marks. 🤞 for birds there.

Another trip through Black Point Wildlife Drive

Forecasters got it wrong again yay! It was a gorgeous morning so we drove through again and saw some great stuff. Then we explored the surrounding area and saw manatees. We went over to Gator Creek and saw Black Necked Stilts so it was a wonderful birding day.

We thought about going through the drive again this afternoon but the promised thunderstorm did roll in. Oh well. We had time to get the truck washed and gassed up before the rain came. Tomorrow we go to Mayport AFB (Pelican’s Roost is the campground name) in Jacksonville.

Hope you all enjoyed this post! XO

Go east then west

We left Clerbrook yesterday. Allen, Andrew, John and Jim came over to see us off. Allen and Andrew are both RV experts and have become our friends. Allen got the camper out onto the road and checked the height again. He had put new suspension systems on both the truck and the camper which could raise the height. We are 13’3” and are a perfect height to safely go under bridges in any highway in the country. We still need to be careful off the highways but we got the Rand MacNally GPS and Atlas the truckers use so we feel we are very safe this time. We’ve spent weeks/months going over every little thing and upgrading anything we could. We are looking forward to going across the country and coming back in September or October.

We wanted to do some local birding before we start our coast to coast trip so we are in Titusville, FL, staying at an Elks Lodge very close to Black Point Drive. Went there yesterday and didn’t see many birds. The water levels are very low, it was sad.

Today is overcast so we went to Kars Park, our first campground. It’s only for military and NASA employees. We found a woman Vic knew from before he met me, only as a fellow camper in case you’re wondering. She’s young, married with 2 toddlers now. Vic tells the story how he and two of his friends, also campers, were talking about how beautiful she is. Vic says yeah but did you see her feet? One of the other guys says I didn’t even know she had feet! Haha. (Her feet looked fine to me) We had a good time catching up with her. Here she is with her 7 month old daughter Savannah. She’s a precious happy little thing, almost walking.

Sam and Savannah

Then we went to the Space Force Base (they re-named Patrick AFB). Vic got a Bose speaker at the Exchange and we’ve been listening to music all afternoon, very enjoyable. He’s making a new playlist.

We got some sushi (they have great sushi) and other incidentals at the Commissary. Back to the camper and enjoying being off grid with all the amenities every one else has. Living the dream!

Next stop will be Mayport AFB in Jacksonville for a few days. We have a reservation for Friday.

Apopka Wild Life Drive

To my new followers Apopka is nearby, open Fri-Sun and holidays. It’s a free 10 mile drive in Apopka.

Google it if you are interested in more information.

These photos are from last Friday morning. We had beautiful weather and almost had the place to ourselves.

I must have been on the right side of the road since I took all these photos except for the Purple Gallinule. Vic took the Gallinule.

Key West final days

We will leave on Thursday, tomorrow. We love it here, it’s relaxed and people are mostly chill. We met our next door neighbors Diane and Ron and their dog Marlee a mini doodle. Zoe and Marlee are best friends playing whenever they can. Marlee looks at the window watching for Zoe.

Marlee

Vic went fishing on a gang boat yesterday and caught a lot of red snapper. Tonight we are taking it to a local restaurant (outside seating) and having them cook it. Yay! We are inviting Marlee’s parents to go with.

The fisherman
We all dug in before the photo was taken

The restaurant cooked some fried and some blackened. Unbelievably delicious. Each pound of fish came with 2 sides / coleslaw (great), yellow rice, Cuban garlic bread (yum), steamed veg, etc.

There was a lot of omg-ing going on, the food was amazing. We got to know Diane and Ron better and very much enjoyed their company.

Now we know 4 people we want to see again next year when we come back.

Sunrise over Key West

Farewell to new friends

We met John and Dawn a few days ago and started watching the sunset together and lingering a while after enjoying our conversation. He’s retired from the navy, then became a traveling ER nurse. She’s still working a civilian job while going to law school. We all hit it off and we hope to meet up with them at next winters trip. Or we’ll surprise them and go to Michigan. They had to leave this morning. ☹️

Key West sunset

Today my knee was sore I guess all that walking yesterday. We didn’t do much, a little shopping. Our neighbors recommended Sister Noodle so we take out and it was delicious!

Our neighbors have a miniature Doodle, Mallory. Zoe and she play and really go at it rolling around play biting each other.
