Roseate Spoonbills Plus

Today was an exceptional day. Lots of flying birds and fish eating going on.

Yes they whistle while they are flying.

It doesn’t seem fair the grackle has a bigger fish.

We were all in our usual places watching the water for action. Immediately in front of us are concrete posts spaced several feet apart. Beyond that are low bushes, grasses and reeds right up and into the lake water. As we watched, a hawk flew into the low bush in front of us and grabbed a snake. The hawk tussled with the snake behind foliage where we couldn’t see what was happening. Then they both flew up and off to another bushy area. It was very dramatic especially because it happened right in front of us!

Next we have an Osprey dive that is full of drama.

Thursday at the Landing

There were flurries of activity punctuated by periods of no activity. That’s how it is, you wonder if anything will happen. Then suddenly a snail kite flies in or a Spoonbill appears. It’s never dull.

I was walking around a little ways away from the others and saw this night heron sitting in a tree. While I stood there taking a picture he flew.

Pelicans

We had fun watching several pelicans this morning.

Then some scrapping started.

One on the right caught a fish. Middle one came over to be nosy

Hard to see what is going on but the pelican’s mouth is wide open and there is a fish in there.

It was a very enjoyable morning, actually cool enough to want a jacket.

Eagle and Snail Kite

No snail but still very cool shots.

This next one was totally unexpected.

Some of us were standing around talking about what we’d seen so far. Suddenly this otter flew out of the bushes and bolted for tree cover. Vic was the only one thinking fast enough to get the shot. You just never know what animal is going to show up next!

More Birds!

Another gorgeous day here. Another fun day of shooting birds. Living the Dream!

Vic stole the show with this male Cardinal in flight.

Juvenile eagle with a beautiful feather pattern

This bird tosses his catch a couple of times – it has to go down head first. Vic says the fish is a crappie.

Vivid blue and bright white contrast make a striking bird.

Yesterday’s Birds

I bet you’re wondering how long this will go on, different birds and lots of them every day. So am I!!!

So here’s what we saw yesterday.

This green heron is in full breeding plumage. Look at the red legs and feet! The heron seems to have a nest in the dark wooded area behind him. I was thinking how fun to see baby green herons but they stay in or near the nest until they can fly so we won’t be seeing any babies. Bummer.

Birds of the Day

Sunday morning was intermittently cloudy but we managed to have fun and take several photos.

Prettiest tricolor I have ever seen.

Vic used his Merlin app and a wireless speaker to call the woodpecker in. The bird was flying back and forth trying to find where the sound was coming from. That is how I got this next shot.
