Wapiti is what the area is called where we are staying. We are in between Cody WY and Yellowstone. This place is a slice of perfection. We never get tired of the scenery and there is so much wildlife. Also the couple (Bill and Tammy) that own the ranch are wonderful as is the young woman (Paige) acting as campground host. We decided to stay here for a month, maybe longer.

These pictures were taken while we were sitting outside talking to our friends James, Olivia and their 8 month old (so cute with her two bottom teeth in now).

It is absolutely stunning here. I mean seriously just sitting around talking when all what you’ve just seen starts happening right in front of us?

Today is Vic’s birthday and tomorrow is mine. We are both 75.

We plan to keep doing this until we can’t.

We went into Yellowstone early yesterday morning. Boy oh boy we saw some wildlife!!!

A group of mountain goats crossed the road right in front of us!

We saw bears – the lighter face is Jam. The other one is her boyfriend we nicknamed Toast.

We’ve been saying for quite a while we’d like to be the first ones to see a bear instead of coming upon a big crowd of photographers. It happened! We saw a pair of black bears running in among the trees. I got out and searched but couldn’t find them. Vic meanwhile drove a ways then came back. When I got back in the truck there were the black bears again! They were still running but I managed to get a couple of shots before they ran away.

We don’t know what spooked them.

Then we saw a bison with a calf.

Then we saw a bird fly in with his prey. I thought it was a Hawk. Turned out it was a Northern Harrier! Wow!

Continuing on…This all happened on the same day!

We couldn’t believe we saw all this on the same trip into the Park.

Here’s a couple of scenery shots. Everywhere you go it’s one beautiful vista after another.

Safe travels!

We’ve been here two weeks which is the limit and tomorrow we will move. This is a beautiful spot, we’ve enjoyed every minute here. Last weekend was Memorial Weekend and the campground was full. Many of the people live in Cody only 8 miles away so that’s funny. It’s traditional they spend the weekend out here, a very family event. Nice to see. We met several of them and enjoyed hanging out with them.

One afternoon we drove around just exploring and saw a nest high in a tree (and far away). We came back with snacks and water and staked it out. We watched the nest with 3 babies in it for a couple of hours. Finally a parent showed up and fed them. We thought it was very strange the babies were left alone for so long.

Another day we walked around Cody window shopping so here is me and Zoe sitting next to Buffalo Bill Cody.

Tomorrow we will move to Homestead, a small family owned campground nearby and a few miles closer to Yellowstone.

A young couple we camped next to in Ft. Carson has come out to see Yellowstone. They are staying at a different campground but near us. They are brave doing all this traveling with an 8 month old. The baby smiles nonstop and loves to bounce. To say she’s a happy baby doesn’t do her justice.

With all the bear pictures we’ve been posting, I’ve been asked how we tell them apart. Vic does all the editing. He spends a lot of time studying the pictures and notices small differences that just a casual observer would miss. So he gets the credit for knowing which bear is which.

Today we moved from the Lakeshore campground to the North Fork campground, still in the Buffalo Bill State Park. This section is 5 miles closer to Yellowstone. We’ve reserved a week here but may extend.

We are not doing anything picture worthy today, just checking in. XO

We went into Yellowstone this morning, early, to look for bears. We found them! It was very cold and even snowing lightly part of the time.

Before I show you the bears I wanted to tell you about the “beach” accessible by walking paths from some of the sites down to the beach and lake. Some unknown people spent a lot of time creating this hut with openings on two sides. Inside there are two logs to sit on with a flat rock in between for a table. It’s big enough that I could easily get inside.

Whoever did this it’s obvious they had fun doing it. The outside is embellished with rocks.

We came upon a bear jam and again it was crowded so I got out and got these pictures.

The grizzly bear on the left with the lighter face is Jam. The darker faced grizzly with her is her boyfriend we are calling Toast. Doesn’t this look like an engagement picture?

They were playing and rolling around.

After that we came upon another bear jam. Vic got out and took these pictures of Snow and her two cubs.

As we drove away we saw this bison walking down the road.

We got up at 5 am and were on the road soon thereafter. Our plan was to get to Lamar Valley where the wolves are. After driving a couple of hours we found that the road was closed. On the way back we saw several bison walking along the side of the road. They each were by themselves, it was not a group thing. They were close enough I could have reached out my hand and touched it (but of course I didn’t!).

On the way back we saw some bears. Vic had the camera opportunity this time.

The first two shots are of a bear we saw on a hill foraging when something startled him/her and he/she took off running. Then they sat on the hillside looking over their shoulder but whatever startled them did not come out over the hill.

These bears were further on down the road. Jam is a bear we first saw two years ago.

It’s been cloudy, cold and rainy for a couple of days but we’re expecting sun tomorrow.

Hi everyone! We are camping at Buffalo Bill State Park for the next two weeks, about 35 miles outside of the park. We are on the Lake Shore section and next week will move to the North Fork section. We love the layout and space.

And yes we saw grizzly bears!!

We drove into Yellowstone this morning, looking for wildlife. We noticed several cars clustered st an overlook. We couldn’t even find a parking space so I got out and walked up while Vic drove part way down the hill and waited.

What I found was a crowd of photographers taking pictures of a mama grizzly bear playing with her two cubs in the snow. Yes that’s right I said snow. There is a lot of snow still on the ground and it even snowed while we were there!

They sure were having fun!

We saw a marmot and a squirrel.

Also elk and bison.

And lastly, this hawk.

We’ve had a wonderful time here in Colorado Springs. Dawn, Vic’s daughter, has been with us most of the time. Zoe thinks Dawn is part of her “pack”. We’ve had several fires, met some great people who will remain friends. We even made a friend out of the RV repair guy Richard who came out and worked on our hydraulics. Richard might come out and camp with us at Yellowstone. He told us about Crystal Park Cantina, an amazing Mexican restaurant in an out of the way place. We had the best Mexican food I’ve ever tasted.

We’ve played lots of card games.

We watched the Kentucky Derby. I made hot pastrami sandwiches with homemade coleslaw and Russian dressing. They were scrumptious!

Our neighbors James and Olivia, a young couple with a 6 month old baby girl (Riley) plan to meet up with us at Yellowstone too.

We had several inches of snow – beautiful to watch it come down in big fat flakes. Then it melted two days later – perfect. we just wanted to see it, not deal with it really lol.

We love this area, I’m sure we’ll be back at some point.

This is our last post from Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, CO. We are leaving on Monday and heading to Yellowstone.

Most of these photos were taken in our campground and the rest at Cheyenne State Park which is a short drive away.

Now for my minute of bragging … these are all shots of a Northern Flicker Woodpecker.

Vic, Dawn, Zoe and I spent a couple of fun hours watching a couple of these woodpeckers flying back and forth around us.

The three of us were sitting outside playing a card game called Five Crowns (very fun game). The snow has melted all but a patch here and there. The sun is shining brightly, the sky is a vivid blue. We ate sushi from the Commissary for lunch (yum). There’s a strawberry shortcake for later.

We saw a hawk circling overhead. At first we thought it was an eagle (it was very high up) so I got my camera and started shooting.

I just had to share this with you all.
